AUTUMN 2023 Newsletter (Triple Ọ)

Hello and Happy Autumn/Fall!

Greetings to all parts of you, your ancestors, the spirits/energies that walk with you, your families, your home, your work. In the Yorùbá culture (in many cultures across Africa…and other parts of the world) there is an entire protocol for greeting people—which includes inquiring about others that are connected to them. It’s such a beautiful practice of curiosity about and consideration of the world(s) each individual encompasses.

The nickname for this newsletter is Triple Ọ: It is an October update, an Autumn welcome and reflection; and an August remembrance, in that order. The sound of those bolded and underlined letters is closer to how the letter Ọ in the Yorùbá language is pronounced. Ọ is a different letter than O. For those within or around Ìfá who didn’t know there was a difference, now consider that the letter Ọ is the beginning of the names of Ọṣun, Ọbatala, and Ọya…(I’ve left off the accent marks). As some know, the first two are the òrìṣà into which I am initiated (ps that the dot under the s is a letter that has a sh sound). I am also very connected to Ọya…in fact, at one point before my initiation I considered that a “gotcha!” moment would happen and I would be initiated into Ọya given how strongly I see and feel her.

I know that Ọya is working with Ọṣun and Ọbatala in a particular way at this time to shift the very foundation of who I think I am—really, to reflect the shift that has already taken place. I am grateful to her. I am grateful for my own courage to be in and with all the movements. The energy of transformation, advocacy for and work around our ancestors, balance between (and within) the spectrum of feminine and masculine, uprooting what no longer belongs to make space for the new…all of that and more is what she brings. May we all dance and play in her winds knowing that there is joy within and through them.

Autumn Welcome & Reflection

Ekaabo (welcome) Autumn! Initially, I thought Autumn Equinox was on Saturday, but then did a google search to see that for me/where I am, it fell on Friday, September 22, 11:50pm. This shift in the timing makes absolute sense given that it was Friday evening that I did a ritual to ground the energy of clearing in ways I both imagined and didn’t consider I needed. I continue to feel the results of that work, and may for some time. I’ve also considered that I am in the process of reaping the results of the seeds of clearing I have been planting for quite some time now. Both and: this is that.

What in your life requires the energy of clearing? What is already being cleared out that you get to allow? Is it dusting off belongings and cleaning spaces? Is it being clear about what you are/are not doing? Is it asking others to clarify what they are/are not doing? Or is it setting clear game plans, while being clear that at any moment things can change? Regardless, all of this clarification is serving the purpose of closing doors to old ways of being and perceiving to allow for empty space that gets to be filled with something new or left as is. Empty space feels quite good too.

As we are enveloped into Autumn, I invite you to consider the above with gratitude, compassion and love. Whether it is a person or relationship (or the ideas about them), a career path, a project, a specific physical item or space/place, or an idea…you get to set yourself free by not insisting that they remain with you in the same way(s) or at all. To hold something for longer than the necessity of your agreement is to negate the sanctity of the agreement and depress your energy. At this time in our history (collectively and personally), we are being called to rise out of collective depression and expand into the light…lightness…enlightenment.

We are meant to shine in the fullness of who we are in all the ways that looks. May we answer this season’s CALL to fall in LOVE with our lives…Life…and all that it entails.

August Remembrance

As I remember August, I realize just how pivotal of a time it was for me around ancestral healing through intergeneration [re]connection between members of my own immediate living family, and the healing work I facilitated with a group of academics, educators, and scholars (all from the American branch of the African diaspora) who work within or adjacent to Africana Studies. All of the above took place in Accra, Ghana. On the one hand, my family chose Ghana as a meeting point because it made sense logistically. On the other hand, I realize Ghana chose me because I needed to experience all that I did in order to propel me forward to and through today.

My trip there was short, albeit energetically jam packed. I was holding space for so much…perhaps more than I’ll ever know. I felt it though. I wanted to fight the fatigue so badly…I don’t even know that fatigue truly encompasses what I felt.

The idea of visiting the Cape Coast Slave Castle came up multiple times; initially through the suggestions of others, and then through my own idea of what I should do (still influenced by otheres). After all, why travel all this way and not make that trip? Isn’t that what all [Black] people going to Ghana should do? These thoughts and more flowed through my mind. I also considered that perhaps I need to go there and do some sort of healing for the land—after all, I am a healer…it’s my duty…so much has happened here…to the diaspora…I have my tools.

“No. It is not necessary for you to go there, especially if there is no joy in doing so. You get to rest. You’ve done enough already.” That message came through my guidance—which I am getting included the spirits of the land as well. I listened. I decided I would’t go. That action in and of itself sent (and continues to send) a shock wave through a multitude of generations…past, present, and future.

The choices I make for myself is the medicine that is offered to all.

Many of our ancestors were forcibly taken from and to places against their will: I offer them opportunities to heal as I go wherever I choose from my freedom and joy. Many of our ancestors were made to do backbreaking labor with little to no appreciation for their need to truly rest: I offer them opportunities to heal as I sleep…rest…lounge. Many of our ancestors were devalued and conditioned to believe they weren’t enough or that they were nothing: I offer them opportunities to heal as I ground in the knowing that I am enough, worthy and valued because I exist, no matter what other humans imagine or project through their anxiety. Period.

Magnitude is the word coming to me as I consider all of the above. Perhaps what I felt was the immensity of the transformation that was brewing and supporting me in my process of lightening up while in the country neighboring my direct motherland.

So much more happened in August during and after Ghana, but for now I’ll end there because it is enough. May you remember that the reflection of all parts of your journey provides us all with opportunities to heal ourselves. Be who you are. The magnitude and impact of your being is tremendous.
