SUMMER 2023 Newsletter

Hello and Happy Summer!

Sending you sweetness, peace, and so much compassion. Collectively we’ve been through quite a bit. I know this because I hear it through all the grapevines (in addition to everything that is presented to us on the news); and I just tap into all of it (often times without even trying) and sense so much through my individual being. The work of separating out what is mine from that of others has been…woo…necessary. When that clarity settles it is quite powerful.

Whether it’s because I’m a SoCal resident—Angelino to be a bit more specific—who swam with the currents of the interesting weather patterns like everyone else here; or because until just recently things were so up in the air and often times seemed pretty dark and dismal; it feels as though this new season has been a long time coming. I mean, really, I think Summer is still taking its sweet time to fully arrive. The flirty fickle Sun strutting on by minding its business with a ray or few of warm vitamin D infusing light here and there…but really not giving a f*ck. Minding it’s own business. I feel like it’s a lesson to all of us to do the same, as well as a reminder that things change, including and especially the weather. Things are always changing. To not ground in this truth is to move through this existence with a level of delusion that oftentimes ends up being more painful than not—unless you came here to experience exactly that. To each their own. It’s all valid and the sum total is individual and collective transformation.

I’ve had to let go of so many things that I was stubbornly holding onto from this idea of who I think I am—or more precisely, who I have been cultivating myself to be.

A clear example for me occurred around stepping into a role for an external project that required me to conduct work/tasks that I haven’t done since the ending of my job in Corporate America in 2018—more along the lines of administration, organization, and all else that is related. Granted, I’ve been doing all that for my own business (because I mean, as a sole proprietor, you are and you do ALL the things). But it had been a long time since I had conducted that work for others/a project that I didn’t consider my own (i.e. birthed from my own consciousness and owned by only/mostly me) more full time. I struggled with this decision because my mind judged it as moving away from my goals of building my own empire. I had also been stuck in the pride of being my own boss and supporting myself (more on that below) doing what I love. It had taken such a long time to get here and to give it up felt like such a loss.

And I foresaw (correctly) the degree to which I’d need to fully immerse myself in this project, I knew it meant putting my own personal projects on the back-burner. Devoting the energy, time, and focus required to support this external project in a way that would satisfy my spirit—because my nature does not do sloppy, no ma’am—was 100% what I needed to do. “Spirit, if I’m supposed to do this,” I literally prayed in my altar room, “Imma need you to make sure I’m covered with rent and all these other bills I need to pay.” And I have been thus far, and things have worked out as need be.

Just trust—I keep hearing and feeling.

We’re always trusting something; it’s just a matter of what we are placing our trust in. And the test I continue to bring to myself is that of seeing beyond the illusion to know that I will be ok.

Part of what needed to be worked through within me was a resistance to going back to calling upon the skills and talents I had fine tuned during my time in Corporate America in order to (1) provide a stable income to take care of my living essentials and (2) to be able to support and even amply the spiritual and creative work I do. I was getting in my own way…blocking the flow of abundance.

Le sigh. I know all this. I’m the first to say “It’s all spiritual.” Our spirits are having a physical experience; and thus everything we do in this physical plan is part of our spiritual path. A huge part of what my spirit came here to do, reflect, and offer is grounding, organization, presentation, and navigating logistics and operations. A huge part of what leads to angst, confusion, unnecessary chaos and so many other challenges for artists and spiritual practitioners, if not most humans, is being ungrounded, unorganized, having flimsy structural foundations, ineffective communication, lack of attention to detail and so much more both professionally and even personally. And I’m really good at those things…like, I can do it in my sleep good.

Rather than continue to go against the flow as far as what can bringing me the financial and other abundance I need, I get to surrender to (and increased my gratitude for) the skills that I developed through 15 years working for a 9-5 job in financial services. Needless to say, I have begun to look for various high level administrative, operational, and other related jobs (if you have any leads, do send them my way). I continue to conduct my spiritual/healing, and creative work because it is my heart. And I’m grateful to my head for learning and mastering many of those others skills so that I don’t have to approach what my heart wants to do with pressure and anxiety.

The “external” project I referenced above is the play "Palmares", which was accepted into the 2023 Hollywood Fringe Festival, and has been doing exceptionally well during our 5 show run this June—all them sold out within just 2 days after the festival began, and our final official show is June 25th. I began as part of the cast—playing the role of the Mãe de Santo—and later joined the production team as Associate Producer and crew. I knew I could support in really powerful ways and offered myself up to do so. I’m really proud of what we have accomplished since the inception of the idea that didn’t even look like a play 15 years ago, thanks to the vision of Mestre Amen and Nayla Santo of Brasil Brasil Cultural Center. Everything that I have learned, the re-ignition of my confidence, and the support I’ve been able to receive and give throughout my experience thus far has been such a blessing. It’s a blessing to bring together my skill sets and the things that bring me joy. If this isn’t integration, I don’t know what is.

One of the biggest lessons I have grounded in during my time with “Palmares” is to see that I don’t need to make a distinction between my own projects and those of others or external project. While that level of separation has its usefulness at times, in my case I used it to almost block myself from seeing certain opportunities for maintaining and even enhancing my job. I and all members of the Creative & Production Team, Cast, and Crew have been working so hard and diligently to make the play what it is. This work and experience belongs to all of us—it contains our energy. When I see all work that I am passionate about—and that shows up on my doorstep to help me be more of myself—as my work, the world becomes a completely different playground with so much space and so many toys to build castles and allow my imagination to run wild.

May this summer activate a new level of awareness for you to step into a different vision that transforms everything about you.

May what needs to be integrated, alchemized, or released be brought to the surface for exposure to the purifying fire of the sun.

May you hold hands with your joy in ways that activate your inner courageous, curious, and innocent child, regardless of the outer physical being of past versions of you actually got to experience it.

May you live, love, learn, and ground in your brilliance, however, wherever, and with whomever it gets to be expressed.

This Season’s Messenger/Message

I pay attention to a lot, all the time. Everything speaks…provides an opportunity for reflection…is part of some synchronicity that someone requires to ground in some truth. In considering a specific message or messenger for this season, the first one that came to mind was Turtle as a fulfiller of both.

Key terms/medicine words from my teacher Diana for this wonderful creature include:

Patience • Stability • Persistence • Instinctual • Awareness of Boundaries • Power of the Feminine • Protecting Sensitivity Symbol of Earth • Being at Ease with Self • Navigating Life

The first major instance of receiving the message that Turtle embodies came not from Turtle itself, but rather from part of the Ifa divination for our new year earlier this month—in the traditional Yoruba culture, the new year occurs in June. The message came in the blessing of long life, which paves the way for the encouragement to be patient, not to rush unnecessarily, to take your [proper] time in doing things without the anxiety that you won’t be able to get them done (I’m paraphrasing). This reminder was just what I needed to sooth some angst that had been floating to the surface about career, fulfilling my dreams in many ways…making it. Given the idea of where I should be because of my age, the ideas of failure or the need to hurry up and get there can settle in. This message from Ifa has been a game changer.

The second major example of the energy of Turtle came in the form of me literally seeing a Turtle a few days after the Ifa service where we received above messages. I was taking a walking along a usual path in my neighborhood. Upon approaching one house at a crossroad (I see you Eṣu), I noticed a fairly large turtle in the driveway. For some reason it struck me as so odd to see it there that I thought it was artificial until, to my surprise it moved! Concerned it would escape and put itself in harms way (the garage was open/not gated), I rang the doorbell to alert the residents. After thanking me, they proceeded to tell me that the turtle was “90 years old or something” and had been there even before they moved in! I engaged with it for a bit before leaving and remembered the message about patience and long life from Ifa and other descriptions of Turtle energy. I smiled at and was grateful for the synchronistic encounter.

The 3rd major encounter with Turtle came in the form of me stumbling upon a video on Facebook of a man caring for a tiny turtle that was born with its heart exposed. It was such a precious story that touched my own heart (pun absolutely intended). The care and nurturing of this little being, the wonders of life, the turtle’s ability to just be even with the challenge presented by its condition, was just so tear-jerking. It was such a lovely way to round out my encounters with this sweet creature—who actually happens to be my Clan Totem/Animals Spirit Guide. So really, my Turtle friends are always with me in their own form and through the connection/overlapping energies of other entities and beings that I am connected to.
